Something for the Wordoholics

If you’re one of those who love words and the written language (you can consider yourself a wordoholic), then you best check out the AskOxford site because this is the place for you. You can read up on the history of the English language, global English, quotations and common language mistakes. There’s a language report, language experts, games and my favourite … Word of the day. This is a great little service that will send you a word everyday. I’ve come across some wonderful words through this and my file continues to grow. Thankfully they will even pronounce it for you, which can be very helpful, and they also supply the origin of the word. It is the easiest way I know of increasing your vocabulary.
As a writer and reader it can be very easy to get addicted to this sort of knowledge. And over the past 2 years I don’t think I have used any other site for my enquiries. Everything I’ve needed could be found here. There are two views available – UK and USA so those pesky Atlantic-crossing spelling variables can be easily checked and most of the articles are not only informative but entertaining. There is one at the moment called ‘Bubbling Under’ which is a must read for language buffs. It talks about how the English language is constantly on the move and includes new words and phrases making their way into our speech.
Of course you can do the boring stuff like search dictionaries and ask grammar questions, but they also have on-line foreign language resources and interactive learning in Spanish, French, Italian and German. You can buy books from the Oxford Shop and enter contests and do crosswords. In fact, if you have the time, you could spend a lot of it on this site! Or is that just me?
Maybe I need to get a life! Enjoy.
