Get Compulsive
September 23rd 2006 05:53
I can’t even remember how I stumbled across Magdalena Ball and her Compulsive Readers. No doubt I was roaming aimlessly around the www globe (this was a few years ago now) and I guess I clicked on a link and there she was. I found myself impressed by what I read on the site, so signed up for the monthly newsletter and I have not been disappointed once. There has always been some interesting book review, news, poll or author interview that makes it more than worthwhile.
But wait – there’s more! (No, you don’t get any steak knives) If you check out the contributors bios for Compulsive Reader you will find an impressive line-up of talent and experience, which gives the site’s articles a wide and varied view point on just about any sort of writing you can imagine. I love a non-biased slant. There are books and writers from pretty well every corner of the globe, not just the big sellers. In fact, quality is the operative word here. Ball, (who resides in Australia) seems determined to spread the word of quality literature, not just that which makes the buck. She includes sections on Literary Fiction reviews and criticisms, which a lot of book sites seem frightened of. Some people may find them a little too highbrow, but if it’s constructive criticisms and comments you’re after, they are brilliant. Then, living side-by-side we have reviews on Commercial and Speculative Fiction, Cookbooks, Health, Poetry … well, the list goes on. There’s also a section of books for writers, again, of good quality.
If you do visit CR make sure you sign up for the newsletter. This little monthly gem is one of the most informative alerts that I have. Magdalena imparts literary information that you would have to read at least half a dozen publications for. She squeezes it down to a quick, enlightening and intelligent alert. She also encourages writer’s submissions and reader’s reviews. Very inter-active, don’t you think?
Check it out – I bet you bookmark it!
